The Issue:
In the recent 25th anniversary celebration of TV Patrol held at the Manila Hotel last July 27, President Benigno Aquino III gave one of the most frank speech ever shown on National Television.

The President started off by stating the importance of media and how it contributed to development, from having only radios to the evolution of having television sets as a source of news. He then followed this by enumerating the milestones of the television program TV Patrol. He praised the network for being able to serve the people with courage, honesty and consistency for a very long period of time. Next, the president acknowledged the great service of the station’s staff on and off the field.

The President moved to the next part of his speech by mentioning a former program that aired to the public. The program was called Dragnet. He quoted one line from the program that says “Just the facts”. From this line he shifted to specifying the facts that were stated from his SONA, the accomplishments of his administration. He continued and then identified one news anchor from the network that has constantly given negative side commentaries and speculations from the accomplishments of the President’s administration. Although the president did not name any person, it is still clear to see that the person he is pointing to is Kabayan Noli De Castro. President Noynoy gave several clues that lead to Noli de Castro. First is that he mentioned the famous line of Noli “Magandang gabi Bayan”. President Noynoy said that whenever the anchor states the said line he hopes the he really wants the nation to have a good night. Another clue he gave was that this specific anchor had a high position in government and had the chance to fix the problems that he was complaining with.

From these complaints from the popular anchor he moved to the third part of his speech wherein he asked that if it is possible to balance their news casting, by not always focusing on the negative side but also include the achievements and good news for the country. Second is to remove the baseless speculations and report only the facts, nothing more nothing less, to do their jobs and be professionals. By doing this, it could contribute to how the nation would be able to think. Negative news will only bring negative perspective and positive news can show that there is still hope for our country.

Here is a video that shows the complete speech of the president.

Noynoy VS Noli:

A clash between two of the most influential people in the Philippines

The medium that both prominent people used was the same. However, they have different message to the viewers and listeners.

What we can do:
As current and future leaders, we should be aware and mindful of our actions. Our power how big or small can affect the lives of others. It is crucial that in each side of the story, we need to identify and hear both sides of the story before we judge and act on it. Lastly, we should use our powers (skills, talents, voices, etc.) to help the country

Opinion on the issue:
The video/speech of President Noynoy was really effective in delivering the message to its listeners. He was very relaxed and straight forward in delivering his speech. The Presidents manner of pauses and tone of voice contributed to its effectiveness to grab the attention of the listeners. He was able to identify three main parts as indicated in the previous section. I also admired the frankness that the president portrayed in this speech. He was entitled to defend himself because it is only fair if we hear both sides of the story. The president is also a person how has the same right of freedom to speak out his mind. However; I think that this is not the appropriate time and place for his bitterness towards the said news anchor that happen to be previously working from the earlier administration from him. But on the other hand it is still difficult to keep a straight face when you know that someone from the room doesn’t like you and gives false information that affects your being.

In conclusion Professionalism should still be observed by both parties. For Noli De Castro’s side although he was just doing his job, he must be mindful to report the news nothing more nothing less. While for the president, maybe, he should stop destroying people publicly because it is not a good sight to have a president of the country that destroys the character and personality of whoever he wants. And lastly again, I admired the actions that the president did to have a faster result. Being simple and frank is the real key to delivering a message to another person.

Significance to iPOWER:
The article is very appropriate since it speaks about prominent people and how they used their power to influence the public. One side is from the government and the other is from the media. As for the news media side, the famous news anchor, Noli De Castro should be mindful of what he says on National Television. This is because his views can manipulate a great number of the people. His opinion should not be reported in the news because of his personal biases. His access to media coverage can really mold the countries’ people on their outlook on the present government.  While for the side of government, the president of the Philippines used the media to communicate with his constituents and grab the opportunity to speak out what is happening trough their own eyes. He wanted to balance the issue by defending his side. He then followed this by asking the news anchors to report on just the facts and to balance the sides of the stories.
